Winter Sections Questions – The Bluest Eye

Posted on February 1, 2011 in Uncategorized by Beltran Kaylena

1) Morrison personifies winter by describing what happens during the season and how things change, such as the weather conditions and the changes that occur. Morrison uses metaphors to compare Mr. Macteer’s face to winter. She compares his eyes to a cliff of snow threatening to avalanche and his eyebrows to black limbs of leafless trees. His face turns pale from the winter sun, his jaw is the edge of a snowbound field dotted with stubble, and his forehead, the frozen sweep of the Erie hiding thoughts that eddy in the darkness.

2) Pecole is surrounded and harassed by a group of boys, while insulting her with insults on problems she had no control over. They teased her situations she had no control overand talked about her father.

This incident affected Pecola, and makes her feel worse about herself, and even less beautiful. She is use to the harassment and the feeling of being neglected, without anyone sticking up for her because she doesn’t have a voice of her own.

This is reminiscent to common bullying because, children are picked on n harassed by other children all the time because of the self-hatred of oneself.

3)Maurine Peel was reffered to as being rich. The quality of her clothes intimidated the other girls. Everyone praised her and treated her with the utmost respect. People were bemused, irritated, and fascinated her. Freida looked hard for her flaws, to make herself feel better while all the other girls adored her.

Maureen was the only one who treated Pecola the way she wanted to be treated. She treated her with respect, she was very friendly and thoughtful. I think this made Pecola feel not as left out.

4) When Claudia and Freida compare themselves to Maureen they fnally are aware of their flaws. This made them feel intimidated by Maureen and even more poor than they already were.

5) When the MacTeer sisters met the prostitutes they immediately knew who they were and were very suprised to see them in their house with Mr. Henry. They didn’t seem to fond of them and the Macteer sisters had heard too many bad things about them, especially the Maginot Line.

They seemed very suspicious, and this shows that they are very curious and aware. Also they seemed a little frightened by what Mama would say if she found out.

6) Geraldine was described in the story as an upperclass black person. She was different from the “usual” loud black people and she seemed racist. I don’t think Geraldine was much of a signifigant character to the story, but she was the mother of one of the boys who picked on Pecola at school.

7) The relationship Geraldine has with Junior is important to the story. Junior noticed at a young age the distant relationship him and his mother shared. Geraldine had a better relationship with her cat than with her son.

8) The way Junior treats Pecola, is the same way everyone treats Pecola. He picks on her and puts her down, and makes her feel badly of herself. Junior’s mother doesn’t treat Pecola any better. She screams at her and blames her for something she doesn’t do. This impacts Pecola just as everything else has impacted her in her life. These are the reasons Pecola is the way she is and why she feels so unloved.

Questions:

1) At the end of paragraoh 19, Oates has Anna ask herself the question “what did it mean to enter into a bond with another person ” ?  Write an essay explaining how the story answers the question.

To enter a bond with someone means to feel complete with someone and to be happy with someone. When you enter a bond with someone you confide in them and you feel whole. Entering a bond doesn’t necessarily mean to start a relationship , it simply means they feel comfortable with someone.

2) What story did you like better – Chekov’s story or Oates’s ? What’s the point of retelling the story ?

I think Chekov’s story was better because Oates’s story had to many details. I like the fact that she rewrote the story from a different point of view, because it gives us a different feel of the characters. I would choose to read Chekov’s story rather than Oates.

3) Why are Anna and her lover drawn to each other ? What do we learn about their spouses that helps explain the attraction ? Are there any other explanations ?

Anna and her lover are drawn to eachother because they feel like they complete one another and when they are with eachother they are happy. They have a dull attraction to their spouses and aren’t very happy.

4) Why is Anna so unhappy after the affair in Nantucket begins ? Why does she think of suicide ?

The reason Anna is so unhappy after the affair in Nantucket is because she has a lot of guilt bottling up inside of her and she says that she needs to drain is her lovers poision out of her. She looks at her husband and sees shame, not in him but within herself. She regrets everything she did with her lover and she wishes she could take it back but at the same time she still wants to be with him.

5) How does Oates’s arrangement of incidents validate Anna’s feelings that “everything is repeating itself ?

Anna feels that everything is repeating itself because it’s like she experienced being in the same room with her loves and she seems as if she is repeating everything but I think she is just coming to realize that what she’s doing is wrong. Oates makes Anna sound like she is going crazy or she has a bad case of bipolar.

Questions :

1) Why is it significant that the setting of this story is a resort town ?  How does the vacation atmosphere affect the action?

The setting of the story is in Yalta, where Dmitry and Anna were on vacation at when they met. The vacation atmosphere affects the actions that were made because when people go on a vacation they want to have fun, they feel free, and they dont have any worries. Also because if are in a committed relationship with someone and your significant other is not around you tend to do things you shouldn’t be doing because you know they wont find out.

2) What does Gurov’s view of women reveal about him ? Why does he regard them as an “inferior race” ?

Gurov’s view simply shows that he has no respect for women. He views them as seasons , they come and go. His wife makes him feel this way about women so he categorizes all of them and refers to them as an “inferior race”.

3) What is the effect of having Gurov as the central consciousness ? How would the story be told differently if it were told from Anna’s perspective ?

The effect of having Gurov as the central consciousness is that we get the story from a man’s perspective and we get to know how he truely feels. It the story were told from Anna’s perspective we would find out how she feels and also we would get a women’s perspective on how everything happened.

4) Discuss the validity of Gurov’s belief that people lead their real lives in private rather than in public: “The personal life of every individual is ‘based on secrecy, and perhaps it is partly for that reason that civilized man is so nervously anxious that personal privacy should be respected”.

Gurov’s belief makes a lot of sense and I totally agree with it. People live two seperate lives,  the one everyone sees and the life they live behind closed doors. Everyone does things in their life that they don’t wish for people to find out about and that is their private life that they like to keep private. Gurov is absolutely right and their personal privacy should be respected.

5) Consider the following assessment of the story: “No excuses can be made for the lovers’ adulterous affair. They behave selfishly and irresponsibly. They are immoral – and so is the story.” Explain what you think Chekov’s response to this view would be, given his treatment of the lovers. How does this compare with your own views ?

The adulterous affair that Gurov and Annawas completely wrong and irresponsible, and they acted very selfishly. I think Chekov would say men and women sometimes make mistakes but what someone doesn’t know hurt them and also that it is just a story so he had to make it interesting. What Anna and Goruv did was wrong but if they weren’t happy with their marriage they should of atleast been honest with their lover and told them instead of continuing to hurt them and make them find out the hard way.

“Where I’m From”

Where I’m From

I’m from Kensington

I’m from abandoned houses, graffitied walls, drug dealers, gunshots and corner stores

I come from a place where the good die young

I’m from a huge family of loud people

I’m from a wonderful mother and a deadbeat father who can’t even remember my birthday

I came from where being ungrateful is never an option

I’m from a childhood friendship that will last forever

I come from watching all the cute boys play basketball in the summer time

I’m from H&M and Forever 21

I’m from an ipod with 1027 songs <3

I come from a place where arguing, self defense, and the freedom of speech are priorities

I come from a wonderful family who care and love me dearly

I can never forget who, what, and where I’ve come from
